Where is the Bitcoin Core wallet.dat located?
Finding the Bitcoin Core wallet.dat file depends on the type of operating system you’re using. Here’s a rundown on the common pathways on OsX, Windows, and Linux systems:
OsX Systems
Mac operating systems default to the following location to store a Bitcoin Core wallet.dat file:
~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/
If you’re using a macOS system, the simplest way to locate the Bitcoin Core wallet.dat file is by clicking the “File” tab and looking up “Application Support.”
You could also access your Library tab by opening the Terminal application and typing the following command:
open ~/Library
Windows
Unlike iOS systems, you’ll find the Bitcoin Core wallet.dat file in the AppData Folder on Windows. The default location on Windows is:
%APPDATA%\Bitcoin\wallet.dat
You can find this location by pressing Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog then pasting the following path into the open field:
%APPDATA%\Bitcoin\
After you select OK, this should open the Bitcoin data directory in File Explorer and bring you to the wallet.dat file.
Linux
On Linux, the location of the wallet.dat file for Bitcoin Core follows this pattern:
~/.bitcoin/wallets/wallet.dat
Although this Bitcoin Core folder is hidden by default on Linux, you could press Ctrl + H to toggle hidden files on your file manager. Otherwise, open your file manager and look for the menu option to show hidden files such as”View” or “Preferences.”
You can also search for your Bitcoin Core wallet.dat using the following:
find / -name wallet.dat -print 2>/dev/null
