Read ArticleAre you stuck with an “invalid recovery phrase” message while trying to restore your Ledger wallet? While this situation is nerve-wracking, it’s not unheard of in the crypto community. In fact, ReWallet has helped many clients with Ledger wallets who can’t get into their accounts due to an invalid seed phrase.
Even if you’re struggling to enter the correct seed for your Ledger hardware wallet, there are ways to get back into your wallet. Be sure to review how to restore a Ledger wallet for complete information on the seed recovery process.
The Ledger wallet’s recovery phrase (aka seed phrase) is a list of 24 words that allow users to access and recover the crypto assets in their Ledger device. When people set up their Ledger hardware wallet using the Ledger Live app, their device generates a 24 word seed phrase based on a list of 2,048 words from the BIP39/BIP44 standard. Anyone who has access to this 24 word recovery phrase, also has access to cryptocurrency in the Ledger user’s wallet.
Note: the 24-word recovery phrase isn’t the same as the Ledger optional passphrase. The latter phrase is associated with a secondary “Ledger hidden wallet.” For more details on the distinctions between seed phrases and passphrases, check out ReWallet’s complete guide on the “Ledger Seed and Passphrase.”
To restore cryptocurrency in a Ledger account, you need the 24-word recovery phrase associated with the wallet you want to recover. You’ll also need your optional passphrase if you stored your cryptocurrency in a Ledger hidden wallet.
Aside from these phrases, you need a crypto wallet that uses the BIP39/BIP44 standard. You don’t necessarily need a Ledger hardware wallet and Ledger Live app to restore cryptocurrency with your recovery phrase, provided the wallet you’re using recognizes BIP39/BIP44 words.
When you have everything you need to restore your Ledger wallet, you only need to follow a few steps to regain access to your crypto assets.
