On March 22nd, 2023, the Toronto-based company Decentral announced the retirement of its self-custodial crypto wallet Jaxx Liberty effective at 8 AM EST on March 27th.
However, that doesn’t mean you’ll lose all of your crypto if you’ve been using a desktop or mobile Jaxx Wallet. In fact, the Decentral team laid out a clear migration plan for people who used the Jaxx Liberty wallet to store their digital currencies.
If you have cryptocurrency in a Jaxx Wallet, you can recover your crypto on another self-custodial crypto wallet. Keep reading to learn the steps to safely retrieve your virtual assets from the retired Jaxx Liberty wallet. We’ll also explain common problems you may run into and how crypto recovery services can help.
Jaxx Liberty Retirement - What Happened?
Decentral’s decision to retire the Jaxx Liberty wallet was primarily due to the company’s increased focus on a new project called “Andiami: The Quest for Liberty.” Although Andiami is still in its early stages of development, its stated goal is to help crypto projects like Ethereum achieve node decentralization with new software and hardware tech. Now that Andiami has over 62,000 whitelisted guests, Decentral’s CEO Anthony Di Iorio signaled he wants to pivot the company’s focus to building the infrastructure for Andiami rather than maintaining the Jaxx Liberty wallet.
Jaxx Wallet Recovery - How to Regain Access to Your Digital Assets
Decentral laid out a few basic steps to recover your Jaxx Liberty wallet:
- Find your Jaxx Wallet seed phrase.
- Create a new account with the Exodus Wallet.
- Select “I Already Have A Wallet.”
- Enter your Jaxx Liberty seed phrase in the correct order.
- Hit the “Restore” button.
If you’re having problems with your seed phrase or your Jaxx Wallet recovery is not working, no worries! Below, we’ll go over the Jaxx Liberty recovery process in greater detail.
How to Retrieve Your Jaxx Liberty Wallet Seed Phrase
Although the Jaxx Liberty wallet is now in retirement, the team at Decentral said they’d give users “a number of weeks” to view their seed phrase and create a proper backup if they didn’t already write it down or can’t find their copy of the seed phrase. If you need to backup your Jaxx Liberty seed phrase, open the “Security” tab by clicking the Menu icon on the top right of the app.
Please be sure you’re in a private area when you open these words, and have a pen and paper nearby to write them down.
Regain Access to Your Jaxx Liberty Crypto Using the Exodus Wallet
Decentral mentions it partnered with Exodus Wallet to make recovering funds from the Jaxx Liberty app as straightforward as possible.
Once you have your 12-word seed phrase for your Jaxx Liberty wallet, follow these steps to access your funds on Exodus:
- Visit Exodus.com on your desktop or download the Exodus Wallet app on a mobile device.
- When setting up a new account, click “I Already Have A Wallet.”
- Type your 12-word seed phrase in the correct order.
- Select “Restore” then “Continue & Restart,” and wait for the funds to appear in your Exodus account.
If you already have an Exodus Wallet, you’ll need to set up another wallet using your Jaxx Wallet’s 12-word recovery phrase and transfer these crypto funds to whichever account you prefer to hold them in.
Note: Exodus points out a few virtual currencies may not appear on the Exodus Wallet. For instance, the Exodus Wallet will only display the last private key address recorded on the Jaxx Liberty wallet associated with coins like Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC). Recover Jaxx Wallet Assets in Another Crypto Wallet
If you don’t want to use the Exodus Wallet, Decentral suggests importing your private keys on the Edge Wallet. Like the Exodus Wallet recovery, you must set up a new Edge Wallet and use your Jaxx Wallet’s 12-word seed phrase to recover your crypto.
While you can use the 12-word recovery phrase on other crypto wallets, Decentral recommends using Exodus and Edge because they are official partners, and both of these wallets offer detailed instructions and support for this migration process.
Recover Jaxx Liberty Using the Wallet File
By the way, if you want to restore your Jaxx Liberty using the wallet file, you can find your Jaxx wallet file in the following directory:
Windows:
C:\Users\Your Computer's User Name\AppData\Roaming\Jaxx\
MacOS:
~/Library/Application\ Support/Jaxx/
Problems Recovering your Jaxx Liberty Wallet
If the recovery process with Exodus or Edge isn’t going smoothly, you may be running into one of the following issues:
- Incorrect or Invalid Seed Phrase: There’s a chance you may not have the correct copy of your Jaxx Liberty seed phrase. For instance, perhaps you have a few words that are out of order or misspellings. If every word in your seed phrase isn’t 100% accurate, you can’t restore your funds to a new wallet.
- Corrupted Wallet File: For those trying to restore Jaxx Liberty on a desktop setting, there’s a chance your wallet file may have bugs, is corrupted or the hard drive it was stored on failed. In this case, you should consider contacting professional crypto recovery services to re-access your crypto holdings.
- Forgot your Jaxx Wallet Password: You might be having an issue getting into your Jaxx Liberty wallet because you don’t have the correct password. For instance, suppose you need to view your seed phrase again in your Jaxx Liberty mobile wallet. In this case, you need the password to get into your old Jaxx account to review this phrase. Losing your Jaxx wallet password also prevents you from restoring your wallet using your Jaxx wallet file, as the password is needed to decrypt the private keys. Nonetheless, in both cases, a recovery of your Jaxx Liberty wallet is still possible.
